An Inconvenient Blog Community

A few days ago I set up a new blog community here on LiveJournal called Climate Crisis Action Team. This community will be as global as possible in scope, but may lean towards being a bit American-centric. I'm really interested in making this a hands on community where we share ideas, ask for advice, brainstorm campaigns and act as an educational tool.  For those on LiveJournal, you can join in on the conversation at [info]For those not on LiveJournal, you can either join by opening a free account, or you can catch the posts by subscribing to the RSS or ATOM feeds: http://community.livejournal.com/planetcooldown/data/rss & http://community.livejournal.com/planetcooldown/data/atom.

TreeHugger (blog) loves me

I'm very honored to be featured in this week's blog love on TreeHugger for my post hosting the Carnival of the Green #33. TreeHugger is probably the most widely read environmental/green living blog in the blogiverse.

Pot Pourri: Oil-Free Congress Rally, my election-judge friend, green solicitations, MySpace

Attended the oil-free congress rally this evening. A couple of other cheerleaders showed up and we did a few cheers. Deanna of Dee's 'Dotes has photos here and here.  [info]thecause was also there (he organized the event) and also took pictures. He will hopefully be posting some of them on his journal. We saw Pete Ashdown driving his RV along 7th East during the rally and we waved at and cheered him.
____
My friend [info]mwalton writes about her experiences and lessons learned as an election judge in yesterday's primary election here.
____
Writing a lot of posts on green and environmental issues has gotten me some emails for promoting "green" articles or products lately. One such solicitation was asking me to post about some type of new diesel fuel (not biodiesel) that was supposed to be greener. I checked out the linked website, but still had questions. I emailed back with my questions and received no response, so I never posted about it.

Another solicitation has offered me a book to preview at no cost to me in the hopes that I would post about it. I should be receiving the book shortly and I'm willing to review it here when I do.

I got an email asking me to link to this article which talks about using the internet to further build the green movement in a bigger way than individual actions can. I thought the article was interesting and thought provoking enough that I'm fine with linking to it.

I received a virtual press pass to preview Time Magazine's current issue which features Teddy Roosevelt on the cover. The email reads " the man whose quest for conservation and the preservation of the environment and its wildlife left a lasting legacy on the United States including the development of National Parks and monuments as we know them today..

Special attention is paid to President Roosevelt's naturalist background, including stories about his death-defying exploration of the Amazon rain forest, his dedication to preserving natural parks across across the country, and his love for nature. "

While it's true that Teddy Roosevelt does have some good green acts to his credit (such as curbing the  "monopolistic corporations" and the development of our national parks) he's not exactly a hero to a peace activist like me. War, after all, is horrible on the environment as is our lust for global domination. He was quoted as saying in 1897 "I should welcome almost any war, for I think this country needs one." There followed some horrible wars during his administration. U.S. --soldiers in the Phillipines during that era were ordered to "Burn all and kill all" and 600,000 Filipinos died.

From Time Magazine:

"He was the first President to urge wholeheartedly that the U.S. accept its role as a global power. God knows, he accepted it. He looked at the U.S. the way we now understand the universe, as a thing that began expanding the moment it was born. (It tells you something that he never got over the habit of casting covetous glances toward Canada.) But not until just before he reached the presidency had the nation finally burst through its continental confines. In 1898 the Spanish-American War and its aftermath had placed under U.S. supervision a whole collection of territories and dependencies: Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. Suddenly, to Roosevelt's utter delight, the U.S. was acting on a world stage, across two oceans. As Assistant Secretary of the Navy under McKinley--a job that should have been nearly meaningless but that he turned into a power center--he had urged on the war. As a Rough Rider, he had fought in it. As President, he would make Americans understand that their new global prominence was a long-term proposition."

I decided to sign up for a free MySpace account as another communication tool. Yes, I know that MySpace is owned by Rupert Murdoch the evil media king. Yes, the ads kind of suck. It's just something I'm trying out. This page on LJ will remain my main blog, but I may occasionally repost some articles on MySpace. If it doesn't work out, I'll drop it eventually. If you want to check it out or if you have MySpace and want to friend me, my page is here and my MySpace blog is here.

Best Cheerleader

Pom Poms not Bomb Bombs Blog

Deanna and I have been working on getting a Pom Pom not Bomb Bombs group blog going for the last couple of months. I envisioned something like the This Divided State blog, with several (if not all) of the radical cheerleaders posting at least occasionally. So far it's only been me and Deanna, but I'm hoping that will soon change. Once we get those other cheerleaders blogging they may get as adicted to it as we are!

Pom Poms not Bomb Bombs Blog

We set it up as an LJ community. Anyone on LJ is free to join the community or comment to posts, but it's set up right now to only let cheerleaders (that have registered) top post.

Utah Bloggers Conference next week

I just found out about this Utah Bloggers Conference that's happening on Tuesday. I will hopefully be there, but it does conflict with the HEAL Utah Mini-Golf Classic that my family is planning on participating in.  It would be fun to meet fellow Utah bloggers.

Blogging

Live Journal keeps adding new journal styles that I like to play with. I still don't have quite what I'd like for this blog, but I found a style I like for the Progressive Utah community that I moderate. This style looks clean and simple to me.

I've toyed with the idea of having a different blog service for this blog. The pros of livejournal is that it's open source which I'd like to support, and I also find it easy to use, which is a  big plus as I'm not as computer literate as I'd like to be. I'm also quite well established at this address and this blog has been linked by many others. The cons are that I can't put html on the main page other than in posts, which really limits how I can set up my blog. So far I've had to add all the html extras to my user page.

Political Women Bloggers

One of the great things about living in these times is that women's opinions about politics are listened to more than in times past. I just came across the website What She Said which features women political bloggers. On the right hand side of the page is a blog roll of "Progressive Women Who Blog Politics" with a really long list of links. I stopped counting at 300 and I was just in the Ms alphabetically.

America's Debate and America's Debate Bloggers

I just wanted to give a plug to an internet resource for political junkies -- America's Debate. America's Debate gives you a chance to hone your political debating skills with people from all across the American political spectrum, and even some from other countries as well. The forum is well moderated to make sure that participants don't engage in flame wars. You are also asked to back up your arguments with links -- it's not for lazy political commentators.

Some of America's Debaters have their own blogs, which again span the political compass and some aren't all that political at all:

The Wertz Generation
Titus' Bloggus Maximus
The Gull Reef Club
Cyan
Eeyore's Rays

Brief Prolixity
Quarkhead
The Truth According to CP
Crashfourit

City Weekly says I'm a he

City Weekly wrote about this post from Democracy for Utah that refers to the Deseret News as the better paper of the two in their coverage of Democrats in their "Hits and Misses" column (see the center "Hit")

The commenter they are refering to as a he . . . is me. . . and I'm a she.

Sad News for Green Party Bloggers

Yesterday Ken Sain announced that he will be shutting down his blog, "Greens, Gays and Government" due to conflicts with his new job opportunity. Ken is a journalist, so it's easy to understand that his independent blogging could be perceived as a conflict of interest.

Ken is far and away the best Green Party blogger out there. My first internet stop after checking email was Ken's blog. I've refered to many of his posts here in my blog over the past year; he had a lot of good contacts and always has information that a lot of us would miss if it weren't for him.

There are more than 50 blogs that I know of that blog about Green Party issues, and I can only hope that between all of us we can fill the hole left by Ken.

Green Carnival

First Carnival of the Green Today

The first Carnival of the Green is today, hosted this week by City Hippy. Looks like a lot of great stuff to read for those interested in protecting our environment, sustainability, and Fair Trade.

I will be hosting the Carnival on December 12, and I'll be posting links to each carnival host each week.

More on Hillary

I've been informed of an independent site related to all things Hillary called Just Hillary . My recent post about Hillary is linked on the front page of the site.

The editor of the site, Gregg Birnbaum, claims that it is "offering the latest news, analysis and commentary about Hillary. Favorable, critical and everything in between." A brief look at the site shows that to be true. It looks like a great resource for anyone interested in following the latest news on Senator Clinton.
