Save Money $ on Sustainable Energy in Motion Bicycle Tours

I'm gearing up to put together a 2007 Green Travel Guide which I hope to complete sometime in February, but in my preliminary research for the series, I found that these bike tours (that I've been salivating over the idea of doing for the past two years)  are offering some huge discounts if you register by February 15th, so I felt it was quite urgent to get the news out sooner rather than later. You can also register to win a raffled bike tour (doesn't include airfare or bike).at the Sustainable Energy in Motion Bicycle Tours site.

I personally love travel that is educational, helps make the world a better place and is gentle on the earth. These tours do all three. Just imagine this kind of trip:

: Be a part of an incredible traveling community of people coming from a great variety of backgrounds and ages with a shared longing for a better world.
:: Study and apply the philosophies of permaculture, green building, small-scale economics, sustainable energy and intentional living.
:: Observe local economics projects and grassroots democracy struggles in the communities you visit. :: Gain a deeper understanding of how your food is grown by speaking with the people who grow your organic food and supporting their work.
:: Through hands-on service projects with leaders of the sustainability movement, contribute and be the change. :: Participate in incredible townhall-style discussions on basic grassroots democracy concerns in the communities where we travel.
:: Learn about nutrition, health and fitness through long-distance cycling while visiting beautiful public lands and gaining experience in low-impact camping. :: Explore and camp in some of the most incredibly beautiful places
in Oregon while learning about natural history and environmental ethics

"BE the CHANGE you want to SEE in the WORLD"

We believe that in order to affect sustainable changes, we must integrate our ideals into our daily lives. By exploring Oregon on our bicycles, we will be demonstrating the use of the bike as a sustainable transportation alternative, while pedal-powering ourselves to communities that are actively living, breathing, and teaching viable solutions to environmentally degrading lifestyles. As a diverse group of individuals with a passion for positive change, we will be collectively bridging the culturally created gap between our ecosystem and ourselves by engaging in hands-on service projects that contribute to the sustainable food systems that provide for us and the planet.

"The best way to FIND YOURSELF is to LOSE YOURSELF in the SERVICE OF OTHERS"

We've been working hard all year to organize these trips that are more than just bike tours- but a meaningful, experiential education intensive for all who participate. Acting in service to progressive communities enriches the intention of the journey, the experience of the individual, and plants the seeds for the pro-active germination of a conscious movement. By contributing our skills and energy to each of the communities that we visit, we'll be creating positive change, making meaningful connections, and empowering individuals with practical knowledge on ecological agriculture and design. Engaging in team building exercises, we will demonstrate the strength in numbers that exists when a group works cooperatively to facilitate change.

"LIVE as if you were to DIE TOMORROW. LEARN as if you were to LIVE FOREVER."

As a cyclist on one of our trips, it's important to remember that what you put into it is what you'll get out of it. The more questions you ask, ideas you challenge, connections you make and old habits you break, the more enriching and empowering the adventure will be! We encourage you to prepare for this journey by simply opening your mind to the wealth of opportunities that await you.

Sustainable Energy Bike Tours

I've been noticing some promotion of these Sustainable Energy Bike Tours from the Portland Peace and Justice Center on various LJ communities I belong to. I love the idea of this tour which has such a great educational value to it. It reminds me a bit of Global Exchange (founded by Medea Benjamin) trips with a more environmental twist.

The tours start in the summer, giving plenty of time to save up. They'd also make great Christmas gifts to friends that would like to live a greener lifestyle. This is something that I'd love to save up to do, possibly for summer 2007.

They are giving away a tour as part of a promotion. Visit the link above to enter.

Here are some of the bullet points of the tours:

  • Study and apply the philosophies of permaculture, alternative building, appropriate technology and sustainable energy.

  • Through inspiring hands-on service projects with leaders of the global sustainability movement, contribute to the communities you visit.

  • Participate in a traveling community of cyclists coming from a variety of backgrounds with a shared longing for a better world.

  • Explore some of the most beautiful places in Oregon while learning about natural history, deep ecology, and environmental ethics.
  • Observe local economics projects and grassroots democracy struggles in places through which you travel.

  • Gain a deeper understanding of how organic food is grown and distributed by talking first hand with the people who raise the food.

  • Spend time with Native American communities, work with salmon restoration and study indigenous building practices.

  • Learn about nutrition, health and fitness through long-distance cycling while visiting beautiful public lands and gaining first-hand experience in low impact camping..
