Resource Page: Choice Debate

abortion
I've found in the past few weeks that just about every post I make about choice, I get at least one person, and sometimes more that want to debate the same things I'd already debated in an earlier post. So in the effort to be a little more efficient, I've decided to build this post as a resource page that I'll link to on the side bar and refer new commenters to.

Jen's Green Journal Posts on Choice

Most of these posts have several comments from "pro-lifers" and my responses to them.

I just wanted to give a plug to an internet resource for political junkies -- America's Debate. America's Debate gives you a chance to hone your political debating skills with people from all across the American political spectrum, and even some from other countries as well. The forum is well moderated to make sure that participants don't engage in flame wars. You are also asked to back up your arguments with links -- it's not for lazy political commentators.

Some of America's Debaters have their own blogs, which again span the political compass and some aren't all that political at all:

The Wertz Generation
Titus' Bloggus Maximus
The Gull Reef Club
Cyan
Eeyore's Rays
thoughts in a bucket
Brief Prolixity
Quarkhead
The Truth According to CP
Crashfourit
The Hot Seat
Mike's Blog
JulesRants
Doc's Rants
Canada's Debate
Liberal Sym.me.try

My "Green Shopping and Gifting Resource Page" has been updated -- you can find it here. I will be doing another post on "gifts that give on many levels" soon -- and this new one will have a local/Salt Lake City/Utah focus to it.

Thanks to Tim Willard for emailing me about this:

FEATURE: Carnival of the Green

from City Hippy :

City Hippy & TriplePundit are delighted to announce the launch of the Carnival of the Green.

The Carnival of the Green will travel from blog to blog on a weekly basis, like a real carnival. Inspiration came from the Carnival of the Capitalists.

Each week, on mondays, a green blog will host the carnival and will provide, in one single and probably large post, a digest of the posts other green bloggers have submitted for consideration during the previous week (friday to friday).

Each carnival will also have a link to the previous and next carnival hosts as well as a link back to this Launch post (either on City Hippy or Triple Pundit or both if you like).

more info here )
Edit: Many of the above hosting slots are now filled or outdated, but the posting info is still the same . . . ps: this carnival is related to Green as in the environment, ecology, fair trade etc.

My Current Projects:

One Utah -- The most widely read political blog in Utah. I'm now a regular contributor to this blog.

Pom-Poms not Bomb-Bombs -- Utah's radical cheerleaders. We formed in 2002 and have been having fun and supporting great causes at the same time.

Progressive Utah -- another way to get information about events of interest to progressive Utahns out there, and to make connections and friendships with other progressives in our un-progressive state. This is one of the LiveJournal communities that I started and manage.

Other LiveJournal Communities -- I've created and manage other LiveJournal communties. I keep seeing needs that no one has created a community for (in the world of LiveJournal) and in a few of those cases I've gone ahead and created communities.

My Bias

  • Dec. 2nd, 2004 at 10:13 PM

My Bias

It's impossible to be completely objective, and I'm not an exception.

It's probably obvious that I'm something of a liberal and that I believe in the values of the Green Party. Even within the Green Party there are divisions, however.

I'm skeptical of the GDI faction of the Green Party. Their stated goals seem to be good, but the actions and rhetoric coming from several of the GDI proponents do not. I am hopeful that they can evolve past some of that, though.

I supported having a Green Party member as the Green presidential nominee. I have nothing against Ralph Nader and think he would make a great president. While the Green Party should be grateful for Nader's contributions, I don't think it's a good idea to base the party around one person year after year. There are also many more complicated reasons for my support of a Green candidate which I have written about in this blog at some length.

I was on the "Cobb" side of the split of the Green Party of Utah, but I was against expelling members and in favor of some type of reconciliation at that time. I'm not sure if reconciliation would work this point. Again, I'm hopeful that that might change. I'm not currently involved with either Utah Green Party due to the kicking out of members by one and going against  the political will of the grassroots of the party by the other.

I believe that Bush is the worst president in U.S. History. This may be a bit myopic as I'm confronted daily with the results of his greed and incompetence unlike most of the presidents we've had, but I can think of no other president in history that has rendered the constitution as meaningless as Bush. Add to that thousands dying in an unprovoked war, environmental destruction, and the massive deficit that my kids will end up paying for and there you have it . . .

Green/Fair Trade (or both) Shopping

GreatGreenGoods: a shopping blog devoted to the green, eco-friendly, consumer. They comb the web looking for products to help you live a greener life!   (almost all products featured are made out of recycled materials).

Justice Clothing Co: "You can help stop the destruction of communities at home and abroad by buying clothing made by workers who are treated fairly. If you don't mind buying clothing made by slaves, children, indentured servants, or workers who are paid pennies a day, we are not your kind of store."

Global Exchange Fair Trade Store: "All of our Fair Trade Stores set an example of working responsibly with world craft producers. We generate income for thousands of artisans and their families in over 40 countries, by operating according to Fair Trade Criteria. "

Syracuse Cultural Workers: "We see cultural work as an essential part of and support for political and economic change. Many of our materials celebrate movements for social change and their leaders, thus helping to legitimize history that is largely ignored or trivialized by commercial media and school textbooks. SCW also helps to unite socially concerned artists with a growing audience hungry for meaningful artwork."

Real Goods: "Recognizing that the world's dependence upon fossil fuels has invariably led to the degradation of our atmosphere and environment, we have strived to demonstrate the need and practicality for renewable energy technologies that are clean, cost-effective, and non-polluting."

Equal Exchange Coffee, Tea and Chocolate: "Equal Exchange's mission is to build long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sound, to foster mutually beneficial relations between farmers and consumers and to demonstrate, through our success, the viability of worker cooperatives and fair trade. "

Code Pink Online Store: Sweatshop free clothing items available. Support peace, Code Pink and sweatshop free clothing manufacture.

No Sweat Apparel: "Our gear is produced by independent trade union members in the US, Canada, and the developing world. We believe that the only viable response to globalization is a global labor movement. "

Ten Thousand Villages: "Since 1946 Ten Thousand Villages has supported the work of literally tens of thousands of artisans in over 30 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, making us one the largest fair trade organizations in North America. Working with more than 100 artisan groups, we purchase fine pieces from craftspeople with whom we have longstanding, nurturing relationships…helping to bring dignity to their lives."

Ecomall.com: "Shop With A Consciousness in EcoMall's Green Marketplace"

Pangea: Vegan and Cruelty Free. "Pangea Sells Only Goods Made in Countries Where Labor Laws or Unions Are in Place to Protect the Workers! We Don't Sell Any Products Made in China or Other Countries Known for Sweatshops."

Alternative Outfitters : An "online resource for fashionable leather alternatives and cruelty-free products for a compassionate lifestyle."

Rawganique : Organic Cotton, Linen, & Hemp Clothing & Home Products. "Please consider our website of sustainable products a quiet, old-fashioned retreat from the hecticness and rampant chemicalizations that are characteristic of the modern, conventional world -- we at Rawganique.com wholeheartedly embrace the Slow Is Beautiful Movement (slow living, slow food, slow cities, slow islands). May love, peace, purity of mind and spirit, happiness, goodwill, mindfulness, health, light, and sustainability prevail. "
